What is low Back Pain?

Low back pain (LBP) is pain and stiffness in the lower back. it is one of he most common reasons people miss work.

Depending on the severity and source of the problem the pain may well spread into the buttocks and down the leg. Frequently this is a result of the sciatic nerve being irritated and then is referred to as sciatica

There are other serious conditions that can mimic back pain so you should seek advice if you have any doubt about the source of your symptoms.

The symptoms that should receive immediate medical assessment/attention - I.e. By an Accident and Emergeny departement include

  1. Any numbness in the perineum area, This is the area between you anus and genitals, frequently referred to as the 'Saddle Area' because this is the area that would normally be in contact with the saddle of a bike if you were riding along.
  2. Any alterations in your bowel and urininary functions such as incontinence, the ability to stop and start fuctions with your bowels could all constitute and medical emergency called 'Cauda Equina'  

Most other conditions can be dealt with by you GP.
